Don’t think of accent modification class as a sterile doctor’s office experience. When imagining adults working with adults on modifying their accents, you might picture something akin to a very serious therapist’s office where the class is rigid and boring.
The truth is, while the class is structured for flow, we make it really fun. We often laugh together and have a great time with language.
We All Struggle With Making New Sounds
As the instructor, my client will ask me to model for her how she is actually saying a particular sound with her accent versus how it should be produced in the American English Language. This allows her to auditorily discriminate the sounds. We laugh because it is difficult for me to imitate her accent. Similarly to the challenge she has in adjusting her speech patterns to sound more like mine. We have a lot of fun with it and it truly helps her with her progress in our class.
The shared human experience of the difficulty in changing long-standing language habits makes our time together that much more enjoyable.
