What Does Elocution Have to Do with Accent Reduction?

Everything! In some places, accent reduction classes are actually called elocution classes.
We think elocution is not only a vital tool for achieving accent reduction but also the main purpose of accent reduction.
What is Elocution?
The dictionary defines elocution as “the skill of clear and expressive speech, especially of distinct pronunciation and articulation.”
When a non-native speaker is pursuing accent reduction or modification, they most often mention their reason being clearer English communication with friends, colleagues, and clients. Or elocution.
So while an accent reduction client might have perfect elocution in their native language, they may need assistance getting to that level in the English language.
At Carolina Speech Services, our classes focus solely on elocution. We do not get into English grammar or parts of speech. Our classes are really for those who already have a great grasp of the language itself.
Accent Reduction Requires Improved Pronunciation & Articulation
Accent reduction classes are exclusively about pronunciation and articulation. We work on the positioning of the mouth and tongue so that the correct pronunciation can be made in each syllable and each word. This elocution practice minimizes errors in pronunciation of English language words resulting in a more neutral English accent.
The outcome of working on elocution in accent reduction class is greater confidence in one’s knowledge of the English language and a better ability to exhibit this knowledge. When confidence is gained, communication is clearer and willingness to speak more frequently and more expressively allows personality to shine through.
It is our goal to provide accent reduction classes that allow our clients to improve their elocution of the English language – not to take away the personality their accent gives them.
