How Is Accent Reduction Class Different Than ESL Class?
CategoriesAccent Reduction for ESL Students
Accent reduction classes and ESL classes are two very different classes with teachers who have two very different skillsets. An ESL teacher is teaching English vocabulary, grammar, tense use, syntax and so forth. An accent reduction class is taught by a speech-language pathologist, whose primary skills are in pronunciation and how to make certain sounds with the mechanics of your mouth and tongue.
Dual Immersion Language Classes
Learning ESL and pronunciation together would be ideal but is typically only found in dual immersion programs for children. For adults, they typically must pursue ESL and English pronunciation class or accent reduction class individually.
The results of taking ESL without pronunciation can be a challenge. When a new speaker of English is quite fluent, but their pronunciation is not where it should be, they are often asked: “what?” After several times of having to repeat themselves, they can lose their confidence to speak English which can interrupt their professional and personal lives.
Accent Reduction Class is a Great Complement to ESL
Accent reduction or accent modification classes are the best way to supplement your ESL class either simultaneously or afterward. With expert help from a licensed speech-language pathologist, you’ll be able to speak English more clearly, so that your understanding of the language is clear to everyone who hears you speak.
